Marketing Agency

How to select a marketing company

Your corporate brand and website are the first impression to a potential client. We’ve compiled a list of tips and questions to ask potential Marketing Agencies to help find the right fit for you.

Are they an established business?

Our industry has a reputation for having a lot of “fly-by-night” companies and in our 20 years we’ve certainly witnessed a lot of them come and go. We know everyone has to start somewhere and we all had our “first” client, however, there is more to it than that. Does the business have the skills to produce the quality you are looking for. Are they even a business? That seems like a silly question but think of the potential harm an incorrectly programmed shopping cart could cost you? It’s important to make sure that your developers have the appropriate business insurance and the staff are trained professionals.

Did you connect with the team?

Just like dating, connections mean everything!

Most business owners are in it to win it and having a long term successful relationship with your marketing team plays a large role in a successful marketing plan. Did you meet the people that will be working on your brand, website or marketing? Was a good connection? Did the Marketing team pick up on what you were putting down? These simple questions are important when finding the right team! How will a designer be able to produce a logo or a marketing strategy that reflects you and what your business stands for if they don’t get it themselves? We’ve heard stories of clients who have never met the team working on their projects. When the sales person doesn’t include the team members in your meeting that is a giant red flag. They might say “Well I can’t bring everyone down to Tim Horton’s for the meeting”, guess what? Another red flag 🙂

Can you find them again?

Referring back to the statement above, did you meet at Timmies? Maybe that is the level or professional you are looking for, but you should at least proceed with caution, I mean they couldn’t even spring for Starbucks?

Where will your files be stored?

This is probably the most important item on this list. We get at least one business (often more) contact us each week and they don’t know where there hosting is, where their domain name was registered and most times don’t have passwords to access their materials. Ensure your Marketing Agency provides you with a master list of all your digital collateral along with the links, usernames and passwords as you may need to access them.

What’s the deal with hosting?

So, why do some companies charge $10/month and others $50? We like to use the apartment building analogy.

There are two types of hosting, re-seller and dedicated hosting. You have probably heard of re-seller companies such as GoDaddy, 1and1, Bluehost and Host Gator. There is nothing wrong with using these companies, however, it’s important to point out the difference. Think of re-seller hosting like your provider is renting out one floor of an apartment building and then leasing one suite to you. They probably know who else is on the floor but they don’t know who is on the other floors and more often than not, where the building is located.

Now think of dedicated web hosting like your provider owns the building and only leases to the people they know. They control all the floors and the entire building, including where it’s located.

Why is this important? Consider this, there is lots of traffic moving all over the web and lots of anti-spam and anti-virus software on all the different levels. These programs can tell if the transmission is coming from a “good” or “bad” neighbourhood. In our example of the re-seller, we don’t know who is on the other floors. It could be adult sites, sites sending out spam, shareware or malware. In some instances this traffic is “filtered” or treated as suspicious. Now imagine that it’s an email, the IP Address of that server could very easily end up on a blacklist and be treated as spam not because it is but because of the sheer volume of other spam coming from that particular server or IP Address.

Reseller vs. Dedicated Hosting

Now do you see the difference? we also recommend inquiring about where files are stored and what back up and security protocols are in place. Our main servers are located in Vancouver with our off site back-ups stored in Montreal keeping all the files 100% in Canada. This is important when you are dealing with financial, medical or legal documents or emails. As Canadians we enjoy a certain level of privacy which disappears when the files are stored elsewhere in the world thanks to the patriot act in the US.

Many re-sellers sound like a great deal, what you should be aware of is that the advertised prices don’t always include typical features like email or security. Companies like ours have a higher price than say GoDaddy because we include email and we definitely include security with every account, because who doesn’t want a secure server.

What else can they do for you?
Ever hear the saying “It’s who you know”? Of course you have because it’s true 🙂 we believe it’s important to be engaged in the business world and the community around you. At Seriously Creative you will find we are involved in lots of different business and charitable causes from sitting on boards and committees of local Chambers of Commerce, Entrepreneurial groups and charitable organizations.

Remember the ideal connection will be a long term relationship. Take your time, perform your due diligence, ask for examples of work and references, but most of all have fun!
